Hoax
 
[dt. »übler Scherz«, »Ente«] der, eine E-Mail-Nachricht, die vor einem nicht existenten Virus warnt und dabei zur schnellen Weiterverbreitung an alle Freunde und Bekannten auffordert (Kettenbriefprinzip). Eine solche Meldung sollte auf keinen Fall weitergeleitet werden, denn dies würde zu einer lawinenartigen Vermehrung des Hoax und damit zur Überlastung und Blockade des E-Mail-Systems führen. Dadurch kann ein aus wenigen Zeilen Klartext bestehender Hoax dieselbe zerstörerische Wirkung haben wie ein aufwendig programmierter Virus oder Wurm.
 
Man kann einen Hoax an vier charakteristischen Merkmalen erkennen:
 
- Es wird dazu aufgefordert, die Meldung an möglichst viele andere Nutzer zu verteilen;
 
- der vorgebliche Virus, vor dem gewarnt wird, soll so neu sein, dass kein Antivirenprogramm ihn momentan findet (da es ihn nicht gibt, wird er natürlich tatsächlich nicht gefunden!);
 
- der neue Virus soll bereits beim Lesen der E-Mail Daten löschen und irreparablen Schaden an Betriebssystem und womöglich sogar Hardware anrichten;
 
- es wird behauptet, die Information stamme von einer Autorität (z. B. Microsoft, AOL, Polizei, Rundfunk);
 
- die originale E-Mail-Adresse des ursprünglichen Absenders oder eine WWW-Adresse sind nicht vorhanden.
